Be Like Chris: Celebrate Milestones and School Adventures in Buriram During Term 1 (2025)

Teaching is full of milestones — both big and small — that remind us why the journey is worth it. From classroom breakthroughs to school-wide events, every term brings a mix of challenges, achievements, and moments that stay with us long after the lessons end.

As we conclude Term 1 of 2025 at Buriram Pitthayakhom (BP) School, I would like to take a moment to reflect on some of the highlights that have defined these past few months. From field trips and Math projects to Sports Week and even birthday cakes in the office, this semester has been packed with energy, growth, and connection.

Gratitude and Connection in the Classroom

Gratitude and connection are two of the overwhelming feelings, if both can be described as such, that I encounter here on a pretty regular basis. Teaching 90+ students daily, one cannot help but form a connection with those teenagers that I attempt to reach as I explain the intricacies of quadratic equations and polynomials. But I also feel deep gratitude for the opportunity to do so.

Now, as semester one draws near its end, it feels like the right moment to reflect on this school year’s journey so far and share some of our experiences and photos from Buriram.

Highs, Lows, and School Life in Buriram

Like anywhere, there can be highs and lows, but I am glad to report that here at our BP BFITS Program in Buriram Pitthayakhom (BP) School, we have had far more highs and pleasant experiences than lows this term.

One of those came only recently when we took a trip to Play La Ploen Flora Park, about 35 kilometers from the city center.

Play La Ploen Flora Park Field Trip

When I say “we,” I am referring to the teachers and students of our BFITS English Program (EP), specifically classes M1–M6 (Grades 7-12).

Acting as both a recreational area and a national educational resource, Play La Ploen features numerous flora exhibitions while also educating visitors on the detrimental effects of climate change. Sadly, this is more relevant than ever.

It was also a chance for our students to enjoy a day free from the classroom, and it was appreciated by everyone — especially us teachers!

Mental Health Awareness on the Trip

Another essential element of the trip was a presentation by two medical professionals who spoke to the students about mental health and the challenges that young people often face. This type of knowledge is vital for teenagers, even if they don’t always appear to be listening.

Teaching Math Through Real-World Projects

Teaching Math in our English Program continues to provide me with great enjoyment, and I particularly love our group project classes. Recently, my M3 (Grade 9) class successfully constructed geodesic domes and tested their structural integrity.

With my background in engineering, I loved seeing my students combine Math with engineering and discover how they work hand-in-hand. For those who teach in Thailand, moments like this are a reminder of how much real-world learning can inspire students.

Sports Week: A Celebration of Energy

Semester 1 also brought our annual Sports Week — four days filled with competitions in volleyball, football, basketball, dance, and cheerleading.

The energy was fantastic, and the support from students and the wider school community was incredible.

The foreign teachers from the Foreign Language Department even played a football match against local teachers, ending in a thrilling 4-4 draw before losing in the penalty shootout.

Colour, Noise, and School Spirit

Sports Week is always a reminder of how important extra-curricular activities are.

The colour, noise, and enthusiasm on display this year made it the most successful Sports Week I’ve seen. Very well done to all involved!

Welcoming New Teachers to the Team

There was a shake-up in our English Program department at the start of this semester, with three teachers leaving and three new teachers joining us. Stewart, Briony, and Kevin have settled in well, and with our head teacher, Charles, our office camaraderie remains strong.

For many teachers in Thailand, strong teamwork among colleagues makes the challenges of daily school life more enjoyable.

Celebrating Birthdays and Team Spirit

Birthdays are significant in our office — thanks to Jacqui for managing the birthday calendar!

Buying a cake or grabbing ice cream together might seem like a small thing, but it strengthens our close-knit team. And honestly, ice cream on a hot day in Buriram is the best.

Reflecting on a Successful Semester

As semester one comes to a close, I look back with pride and satisfaction.

We’ve achieved so much, and while there have been some challenges, the successes stand out. Final exams are approaching, and soon both teachers and students will enjoy a well-deserved rest before the start of semester two.

In the rhythm of teaching in Thailand, these cycles of effort, celebration, and renewal remind us why we love what we do.

Looking Ahead to Semester Two

As I wrap up this reflection, I leave you with photos that capture the spirit of Buriram Pitthayakhom (BP) School — from trips and sports to classroom projects and office celebrations.

For those who want to teach English in Thailand, know that it’s not just about the lessons you give; it’s also about the community you build, the milestones you celebrate, and the students you help grow.

See you in Semester 2.
